Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving promoted by social media. It’s become a tradition on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, as a way to offset the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, to inaugurate the charitable season with a day-long focus on how to be of service – with your time, your ideas and your money.
As a health and human services organization, we welcome this type of effort. What a lovely global phenomenon! In fact, last year, more than 700,000 people donated more than $116 million online in more than 70 countries due to the Giving Tuesday initiative. That’s astounding!
At this time of year, we can’t help but think of donating. Some people do it to offset their end-of-year tax burden, while others feel especially charitable as they shop for holiday gifts and plan celebrations.
One of the best ways to honor Giving Tuesday is to get involved in activities and causes that matter to you. Become a board member. Volunteer your time. Welcome a foster child into your home or support others that you know who have already made that commitment to a child.
Another great and easy way to honor this day is to donate. Of course, we at Samaritas welcome your donations and at the bottom of this blog is a link where you can generously contribute to our programs.
Donating is righteous whenever and however you do it. Giving of our own hard-earned resources to help others who need our help is one of the best ways we can fulfill the Samaritas mission of serving as an expression of the love of Christ. I am always amazed and awed at the generosity of Michiganders this time of the year as holiday donations arrive for those we serve. Despite the generosity, there are more needs yet to be filled.
For this season, regardless of which tradition you follow or believe, is truly about our generous spirit as humankind. I would encourage you to think about how you can give this Tuesday.
Let Giving Tuesday inspire you to dedicate your time, your talent, and your resources to meaningful causes that improve our world. Whenever we come together in service, we enhance the well-being of all.
