Adopt-a-Grandparent Donation Drive

Samaritas Senior Living employees have big hearts for the residents they serve every day. Each year Samaritas Senior Living – Cadillac staff work to make Christmas extra special for residents by purchasing special gifts for residents who need additional compassion.
In 2021, Cadillac business leaders started the Adopt-a-Grandparent Christmas donation drive to expand the program. As a result, more gifts flowed in and fewer employees had to purchase gifts for Cadillac residents.

We need your help to make the 2022 program just as successful.
Here's what's on the list:

Large Fleece Blankets
Large cozy blankets for the winter season are appreciated.
Robotic cat/dog
Pets are great companions, but sometimes electronic versions are even better!

Inflatable Projector Screen
A big projector will help us host movie nights for our residents.

Portable Bluetooth Speaker
Music is a great way to remember the good old days. This kind of speaker will help them connect to modern devices.

White Noise Machine
Soothing sounds helps our senior relax and get and good night’s rest.

Digital Clock
Clocks that list the date, time, and day will keep seniors on track.

Adult Coloring Books
Everyone needs a way to relax. This kind of adult coloring book is a great way to do it.

Markers for Drawing
Adult coloring books and markers go hand-in-hand, here is a sample of the kind we need.

Arts & Craft Supplies
Making your own crafts is a way to keep our seniors sharp and engaged with each other. Here are some examples of supplies and kits needed:

Games & Gaming Supplies
Board and card games requiring witt, mathematics, and fast thinking keep senior brains active and provide a way for our seniors to socialize with each other. Here are some of the items we could use:

  • Automatic card shuffler
  • Grandparent talk (Game)
  • Trivia Books/Cards
Personal Care & Hygiene Supplies
Seniors need and like to look good, smell good, and be prepared when they're out and about. Take a look at some of the items to help them.
  • Sunglasses & Summer Hats (for men and women)
  • Scented Hand Lotion (i.e., Lavender etc.)
  • Men’s Cologne

Amazon Gift Cards
Gift cards for our seniors can help us purchase even more specific items for the people in our care.

Ship the materials to the Samaritas Senior Living - Cadillac facility located at 460 Pearl Street Cadillac, MI 49601 to the attention of Nicole Smith. Contact Nicole Smith at for more information.

* Important Notice *

Earlier this year, Samaritas was under investigation by the state for allegations of abuse in our emergency shelter in Grand Rapids. We opened this shelter 26 months earlier for children from Central America crossing the border fleeing from horrible condition; we were asked to take in Afghan youth when there was no other place for them to go after the crisis in Afghanistan occurred. We accepted 19 youth in response to this request and our long-term commitment to help youth to the greatest extent possible at the time of their greatest need. Samaritas was one of several similar emergency shelters across the country asked to take in these refugee youth.

Due to the severe level of trauma they had endured, many of them required intensive therapy and counseling. As a result of the growing concern we had for the depth and breadth of those needs of the youth and the safety of our team, we made the decision to work with our referring partners to move the youth to other programs where they could access the higher level of trauma-informed care, supervision, and medical attention that they required. Due to state and federal oversight of our programs, we are unable to share specific details of the investigation but we were cleared of any abuse allegations by the state and all youth were transferred to appropriate residential placements where they could receive the care they needed. Samaritas continues to be a state and federal leader in refugee resettlement, including refugee foster care.
