Our shelter on Michigan Ave. is partnership of Samaritas and Wayne County, offering emergency shelter for homeless families. At our Westland homeless shelter, we welcome: two-parent families, single mothers or fathers with children and pregnant women. For any homeless assistance or information about homeless shelters in Wayne County or family shelters in Detroit, MI, all callers or email inquiries should be directed to either other of the following:

  • Detroit residents should call the Coordinated Assessment Model (CAM) – (313) 305-0311
  • Out-Wayne County residents should contact the HARA (Housing Assistance and Resource Agency) – (734) 284-6999
  • Please call the HARA agency listed for your community to receive the most current information on resources available for households that are homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless.

Our Wayne County Shelter Offers

  • Private, locked rooms for each family
  • Three balanced meals and snack each day

  • Help in finding a permanent home
  • Job counseling and placement
  • Case management
  • Education/GED resources
  • Help with financial planning
  • Licensed child care for preschoolers
  • A lending library with computers and internet access

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)

TEFAP provides commodity foods to eligible low income residents in western Wayne County and in the downriver areas. Items are distributed at over 30 sites in Out-Wayne County. No pre-registration or documentation is required. You must certify that you are eligible for the program upon receipt of items. Eligibility for TEFAP is based on the need for emergency food and the household meets these income guidelines (updated May 2022) or participates in SNAP, WIC, FDPIR, CSFP or a child receives free/reduced meals at school.

Like many homeless shelters in Michigan, the Family Center shelter relies heavily on the generous contributions and volunteer efforts of surrounding communities. Help for homeless families in Michigan is always needed and welcomed. No contribution to our Wayne County shelter is too small.
