Strengthening the Nation’s Nutrition Safety Net and Supporting American Agriculture

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of eilgible people by providing them with emergency food assistance at no cost. USDA provides 100% American-grown USDA Foods and administrative funds to states to operate TEFAP.

Organizations like Samaritas countrywide are trusted to distribute the food to local community organizations that directly serve the public.

Eligibility to receive free food from the TEFAP Program

To be eligible for TEFAP, participants must:

  • *Currently reside in Michigan
  • *Have a need for emergency food
  • *Meet the current state of Michigan income guidelines or be a current participant of one of the following programs:

o    Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
o    Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)
o    Supplemental Food Assistance Program (SNAP) 
o    Social Security Income (SSI)
o    Approved National School Breakfast/Lunch free or reduced-priced meal application
o    Food Distribution on Indian Reservation Program (FDPIR)

Food Distribution Sites  

Residents can choose to recieve food from any of the distribution sites on this list. Some distirbution sites include senior centers, churches, and other commmunity centers.

Contact the group you want to work with to learn when and how they will distribute non-perishable and perishable TEFAP food.

The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation. The completed AD-3027 form or letter must be submitted to USDA by:
